I like this version of ol’ Merle the best. He’d been knocked around some after he blazed to glory on the country charts with Okie From Muskogee and The Fightin’ Side of Me. He ain’t the least bit smug here, and all those hits he took actually got him in touch with a wider slice of folks. I figure that with this big ol’ mess we’re stuck in, it’s a good time to sit back, have a beer and listen to good ol’ Mr. Haggard.
Just got off the phone with the preacher, who says I need to throw this one in as well.
He said it fits his mood right now, plus he says it was the song he remembers getting him a little slow-dance action at some place called Randy’s Rodeo way back when. Me, I look at all those boys with their big ‘ol hair and one word keeps popping to mind. Brylcreem.
